What the four hours actually consist of
The flight is the short part. Here is the rest, because it is what surprises people.
A driver collects you while it is still dark, around five in the morning depending on the season, for a drive of about thirty minutes out to the launch field in the North Palmeraie. The site is chosen for its calm air at first light, which is the only time of day a balloon flies reliably here.
At the field there is tea, coffee and pastries while the crews inflate the envelopes. This is not filler: the inflation is a spectacle in itself, several balloons lit from inside in the half-dark, and it is where most people’s best photographs come from.
Then about forty minutes in the air over the palm groves and the Haouz plain, with the High Atlas along the southern horizon. A balloon goes where the wind goes, so no two flights follow the same line, and the ground crew follows by road to collect you wherever you come down.
After landing, a full Moroccan breakfast, then the drive back. You are at your riad by mid-morning.
Is it worth 130 euros?
Three honest yeses and three honest noes.
Yes if your stay is short and every day is already committed: this is the only excursion here that costs you no daylight. Yes if the High Atlas at sunrise is the image you came for, because from the ground you rarely get that horizon. Yes if you are marking something, a birthday or an anniversary. People remember this morning for years.
No if 130 EUR is a meaningful part of your budget: the same money buys a private day in the Ourika Valley for two, which is a fuller experience by any measure. No if you dislike heights in an open basket with a waist-high edge. No if a 5 a.m. start would ruin the day that follows, which for some people it genuinely does.
The weather clause, which matters more than people expect
Balloon flights are weather dependent, and cancellations are normal. Wind at ground level is the usual reason, and the decision is taken early in the morning, sometimes at the field itself.
Practical consequence: book it early in your stay, not on your last morning. If it is cancelled on day two you can try again on day four. Cancelled on your final morning, you simply do not fly. This is the single most useful piece of advice on this page.
Practical notes
- Dress for cold, then for warm. Before dawn in the Haouz plain it is cold in every season. By the time you land the sun is up.
- Closed shoes. You stand in a basket and landings can be a firm bump.
- Minimum age 6. Younger children cannot see over the basket edge in any case.
- Tell them if you have back or mobility problems when you book. Landing means bracing, and climbing into the basket takes a step up.
- The basket is shared, up to 17 travellers with a licensed pilot. It is a sociable flight rather than a private one.
