Morocco’s Tallest Waterfalls, on a Shared Budget

This shared Ouzoud Falls day trip from Marrakech reaches the tallest waterfalls in North Africa and brings you back the same evening, for 19 EUR per adult instead of the several hundred a private vehicle costs. You travel in an air-conditioned minibus with an English-speaking driver, in a small group of up to 17, with departures every day at 8:00 AM.

The road runs north-east for about 150 km across the plains and olive groves towards the province of Azilal, then climbs to the village of Tanaghmelt, where the Ouzoud Falls drop 110 metres in three tiers into the gorge of the El Abid River. Paths lead down through the olive terraces to the pools at the bottom, past the small water mills that gave the place its name, and troops of wild Barbary macaques live in the trees along the way.

What keeps the price at this level is the shared minibus. A solo traveller pays the same per-person rate as a couple, and departures run every day whatever the group size. Three things are left to you on purpose, and they are what separates this trip from the private one: lunch is not included, so you pick your own riverside table and budget, the local guide at the falls is not included though one can be hired on site for about 3 EUR, and the boat ride at the foot of the cascades is optional and paid there for a few euros.

If you would rather have the vehicle, the pace and the departure time to yourself, compare our private Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip from Marrakech. To read about the falls themselves before you book, see our guide to Ouzoud Falls, its name, its water and its best season, or browse all our shared day trips from Marrakech.

What You Will See and Do

  • The falls themselves. Three tiers dropping 110 metres into the gorge, the tallest in North Africa, loudest and fullest from late winter to early summer when the snowmelt feeds the river. Rainbows hang in the spray on sunny afternoons.
  • The path down to the pools. A stepped trail winds through olive terraces from the clifftop viewpoints to the water at the bottom. You go at your own pace, and you can turn back at any level. Sturdy shoes matter more than fitness.
  • The Barbary macaques. Wild troops live in the trees along the descent, the only macaque species found outside Asia. They are used to visitors but they are not tame, so watch rather than feed them.
  • The old water mills. Small stone mills still stand beside the upper cascades, and they are the reason for the name: Ouzoud is widely read as the Amazigh word for the olives and the grinding that went on here.
  • The El Abid River gorge. Below the pools the canyon cuts deep and green through the rock. Cafes and terraces line the riverbank, and small boats run up to the foot of the cascades for anyone who wants the view from the water.

FAQ

How much does the Ouzoud Falls day trip from Marrakech cost?

The shared trip costs 19 EUR per adult and 12 EUR per child, down from a full price of 23 EUR. The rate is the same whether you book alone or as a group, because the minibus is shared. It covers return transport from Marrakech in an air-conditioned minibus, an English-speaking driver, and pick-up and drop-off at your accommodation.

How long does the trip last?

Count on a full day, roughly 10 to 12 hours door to door. Pick-up is from your Marrakech hotel or riad around 8:00 AM and you are back in the city in the evening. The drive is about 3 hours each way, which leaves several hours at the falls. Exact return times depend on traffic and on the group, so we do not pin them to the minute.

Is this a shared or a private tour?

This is a shared trip. You travel with other travellers in the same minibus, up to 17 people, which is what keeps the price at 19 EUR. Departures run every day whatever the group size. If you would rather have the vehicle, the departure time and the pace to yourself, see our private Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip.

Is lunch included?

No. Lunch is not included and is paid on the spot. Several restaurants and cafes sit on the terraces overlooking the falls and along the river at the bottom, so you choose the place and the budget. Bringing water and a snack is a good idea either way, as the walk down and back up takes time.

Is a guide included at the falls?

No. The driver takes you there and back, but the visit itself is free time. A licensed local guide can be hired at the entrance for about 3 EUR per person if you want the history of the site and the hidden viewpoints. It is optional and paid directly on site.

What is the boat ride and is it included?

Small boats run on the pool at the foot of the cascades and take you close enough to feel the spray. It is optional and not included, and costs a few euros paid there. Most travellers who take it say it is the best view of the falls, but the walk down gives you plenty of viewpoints without it.

Can you swim at Ouzoud Falls?

Yes, swimming is possible in the natural pools at the bottom of the falls, and the water is cool even in summer. There is no lifeguard and the rocks around the pools are slippery, so take care and keep an eye on children. Bring a towel and swimwear if you plan to go in.

Is the trip suitable for children?

Yes. The minimum age is 4 years old and children pay 12 EUR. Bear in mind that the day is long, with about 3 hours in the minibus each way, and that the path down to the pools is stepped and uneven. Younger children usually enjoy the macaques and the upper viewpoints even without doing the full descent.

When is the best time to see the falls?

The falls run all year. They are at their fullest and loudest from late winter to early summer, when snowmelt feeds the El Abid River, and rainbows often hang in the spray on sunny afternoons. Late summer brings lower water but warmer pools for swimming. For more on the seasons, see our guide to Ouzoud Falls, its name, its water and its best season.
