Why Book the Private Trip

  • A vehicle for your party only. Air conditioned, door to door from your riad or hotel. No minibus, no waiting for eleven other people.
  • You set the clock. Leave early to arrive ahead of the coaches, or later if you would rather sleep in. Head back when you are ready.
  • A guide who knows the ground. Not a driver with a printed script, but someone who knows the places you cross and can answer what you actually want to ask.
  • No commission stops. The road is lined with cooperatives that pay drivers to bring visitors in. We stop where you want to stop.
  • One price, agreed before you leave. The table on this page is the full cost per person. Nothing is added on the day.

Morocco’s Atlantic Metropolis, in a Single Day

This private Casablanca day trip from Marrakech gives you your own vehicle, your own driver for the whole day, and a licensed local guide waiting for you when you arrive. No other passengers, and no group timetable to keep up with once you are in the city.

Casablanca sits about 240 kilometres north of Marrakech, roughly three hours each way on the motorway. It is the country’s largest city and its economic capital, and it looks nothing like the imperial cities: a working Atlantic port with a French colonial centre, a modern shoreline and one of the great religious buildings of the twentieth century. The Hassan II Mosque, completed in 1993 to a design by Michel Pinseau, is built partially on land and partially over the ocean. Its minaret rises 210 metres, the second tallest in the world, and the prayer hall holds 25,000 people with room for 80,000 more on the esplanade outside.

What You Will See and Do

  • The Hassan II Mosque. The reason most travellers make this journey, and the one part of the day where entry is paid for you. It is one of the very few mosques in Morocco open to non-Muslim visitors, on guided visits at set times, which is why a licensed guide travels with you rather than a driver alone.
  • The Corniche and Ain Diab. The seafront road west of the mosque, with the Atlantic on one side and cafes and terraces on the other. It is where the city comes to walk in the late afternoon, and it costs nothing to do the same.
  • The Habous quarter. The new medina, laid out in the 1920s in a deliberate blend of Moroccan and colonial design. Artisan workshops, olive and spice stalls, and a book souk, all of it calmer and easier to walk than the souks of Marrakech.
  • The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. A white concrete cathedral from the 1930s, no longer used for worship, that mixes Gothic proportions with Moroccan geometry. Casablanca has the largest concentration of Art Deco architecture in Africa, and this is its most photographed piece.
  • Lunch by the ocean. Grilled fish on the Corniche or a table in the centre. The meal is not included in the tour price and is paid on site, so you choose where and how much.
  • The drive itself. Motorway most of the way, across the Rehamna plain and the phosphate country around Settat. Your driver stops where you want a stop, not at a fixed list of shops.

Your Casablanca Day Trip from Marrakech, Step by Step

Day 1Marrakech → Casablanca → Marrakech

Morning part of the itinerary

  • Departure from your accommodation. Your driver collects you in Marrakech early, because the mosque admits visitors on a schedule and the drive is close to three hours. Motorway most of the way, with a stop if you want one.
  • The Hassan II Mosque. Your licensed guide meets you on the esplanade and takes you inside: the prayer hall, the cedar and zellij work, the glass floor over the sea, the hammam beneath. Entry is included in the price, and this is the part of the day that runs to a fixed time.

Afternoon part of the itinerary

  • The Corniche. A few minutes west of the mosque, the seafront at Ain Diab, where the city walks and eats facing the Atlantic. Lunch here if you want it, chosen and paid on site.
  • The Habous quarter. The new medina and its artisan souks, wide and orderly, with the book stalls and the spice sellers. Easier walking than the old cities, and better for buying without pressure.
  • The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart and the Art Deco centre. The white cathedral, then the streets around Mohammed V Square where the 1930s facades stand in a row. Your guide will tell you which ones are worth stopping in front of.

Evening part of the itinerary

Back to Marrakech. You set off when you have seen enough of the city. Count close to three hours again on the motorway, and expect to reach your accommodation in the evening.

A pleasant private journey to Casablanca. Our driver was friendly and gave us useful recommendations about where to go. It is a long day from Marrakech, but the service itself was good.
