Why Book the Private Trip

  • A vehicle for your party only. Air conditioned, door to door from your riad or hotel. No minibus, no waiting for eleven other people.
  • You set the clock. Leave early to arrive ahead of the coaches, or later if you would rather sleep in. Head back when you are ready.
  • A guide who knows the ground. Not a driver with a printed script, but someone who knows the places you cross and can answer what you actually want to ask.
  • No commission stops. The road is lined with cooperatives that pay drivers to bring visitors in. We stop where you want to stop.
  • One price, agreed before you leave. The table on this page is the full cost per person. Nothing is added on the day.

The Atlantic Coast in a Single Day, at Your Own Pace

This private Essaouira day trip from Marrakech runs on your own schedule: your own vehicle, your own driver, and a departure time you choose. No fixed timetable, and no other passengers.

Essaouira is the closest Atlantic port to Marrakech, about 177 kilometres west of the city and two and a half to three hours on the road. That distance is what makes it a day out rather than an overnight trip. The town was known as Mogador until the 1960s, and its walled medina, laid out on a grid in the eighteenth century, is listed by UNESCO.

What You Will See and Do

  • The medina. Straight, wide lanes instead of the maze of Marrakech, because the town was drawn as a single plan rather than grown over centuries. Woodworkers still cut thuya in the workshops under the ramparts, and the souks stay walkable in the middle of the day.
  • The Skala de la Kasbah. The sea wall with its row of old bronze cannons, looking straight out at the Atlantic and the Purple Islands. It is the one view of the town everybody recognises, and it costs nothing.
  • The fishing port. Blue wooden boats built and repaired on the quay, the auction, the gulls. It is a working port, not a display, and it is at its best late morning when the catch comes in.
  • Lunch by the sea. Grilled fish chosen from the stall, or a table in the medina. The meal is not included in the tour price and is paid on site, so you eat where you want and for what you want.
  • The beach. A long open bay south of the town, popular with kitesurfers because of the same wind that keeps the air cool. Camel and horse rides run along the sand, at your own cost.
  • The road itself. The drive crosses argan country, the tree that grows almost nowhere else. Your driver stops where it is worth stopping, not at a fixed list of shops.

Know Before You Go

  • Booking: It's advisable to book your excursion in advance to ensure availability and allow for personalized arrangements.
  • Essentials: Water, snacks, sunglasses.
  • Tips: Easy hotel drop-off; confirm departure time. Traffic may slow near Marrakech.
  • Weather Considerations: Check the weather forecast and plan accordingly, as coastal conditions can vary.
  • Regional authorities have recently enacted a prohibition on the display of goats climbing Argan trees along the route to Essaouira, a visually striking phenomenon that has historically captivated tourists. This measure was introduced following concerns regarding animal welfare, prompted by evidence that certain shepherds were restraining goats in the trees for extended periods to capitalize on their appeal to photographers and visitors. Deemed detrimental to the animals’ health and well-being, this practice has led officials to implement stricter regulations, ensuring that tourism in the region aligns with ethical standards and prioritizes the humane treatment of livestock.

Your Private Essaouira Day Trip from Marrakech, Step by Step

Day 1Marrakech → Essaouira → Marrakech

  • Departure from your accommodation. Your driver collects you in Marrakech at the time you have chosen and takes the road west. Two and a half to three hours, through the plain and then the argan groves, with stops wherever you want one.
  • Arrival in the medina. The car drops you at the walls, because the old town is closed to traffic. From there everything is on foot and nothing is far: the souks, the woodworking workshops, the small squares between the ramparts and the port.

  • The Skala de la Kasbah and the port. The sea wall, the cannons, the view over the Atlantic, then down to the quay where the boats are built and the fish is landed. The two sit a few minutes apart.
  • Lunch facing the water. Grilled fish at the port stalls or a table in the medina. The meal is not included and is paid on site, so the choice is entirely yours.
  • The beach. A long bay south of the ramparts, open to the wind, with kitesurfers offshore and camel and horse rides along the sand. Or the art galleries on the promenade, if the wind is up.

Back to Marrakech. You leave when you have had enough of the town, not when a timetable says so. Count two and a half to three hours again, and tell your driver if you would rather stop on the way for the light on the argan trees.

A lovely private trip to Essaouira. We enjoyed having free time to explore instead of following a large group. The old town and ocean views were definitely the highlights of the day.

A good private day trip to Essaouira. The town itself was excellent and the driver was helpful. The road time is quite long, so I would recommend planning for a full day.
