The Agafay is a stone desert about 30 kilometres from Marrakech, not a sea of sand. It has no dunes. What it has is a landscape of bare rocky hills, the High Atlas on the horizon, and a drive of under an hour from the city.
That single fact settles most of the argument. If you know it before you book, Agafay is one of the best evenings you can have near Marrakech. If nobody tells you and you arrive expecting the Sahara, you will feel sold something. We would rather you knew.

Is the Agafay desert worth it?
Yes, on one condition: that you want a desert evening close to the city, not a substitute for the Sahara.
Here is what the evening actually is. A vehicle collects you in the middle of the afternoon. Under an hour later the suburbs stop and the ground turns to stone and scrub, with nothing built on it. You ride a camel as the light drops, you eat a Moroccan dinner in a camp, there is Berber music, and you are back in Marrakech the same night.
What makes it work is not the sand, because there is none. It is the emptiness, the silence, and the High Atlas turning pink on the horizon while you eat. On a clear night the sky is genuinely dark, which anyone who lives in a city rarely sees.
What it is not: it is not the Sahara, it has no dunes, and no photograph of rolling orange sand was taken there. Any page that shows you dunes and calls it Agafay is showing you the Erg Chebbi, 560 kilometres away.
Why Agafay exists at all
Agafay is popular for one reason: it is the only desert you can reach and return from in an evening. Most visitors to Marrakech have three or four days. The Sahara takes two days at the very least, and three to reach the dunes worth crossing the country for.
Agafay fills the gap. It is what you do when the desert matters to you but the calendar does not allow it, or when you have already given your only free day to the mountains or the coast and you still have an evening left.
Which Agafay trip to choose
Two versions, and the difference is what you do before dinner.
- Agafay desert dinner and sunset camel ride, from 60 EUR. The quieter one: the camel ride at sunset, then dinner at the camp. Hotel pick-up included.
- Agafay camel ride, quad and dinner experience, from 55 EUR. Five to six hours in all, pick-up at 3 in the afternoon and back in Marrakech around 9 in the evening. About 40 minutes on a quad, then a 15 minute camel ride at sunset, then dinner with live Berber music. No licence or riding experience needed, and a guide leads the whole ride.
Both are shared, up to 17 travellers, with transport from Marrakech included. If the quad is the part that interests you, take the second. If you want the evening calm from start to finish, take the first.
When Agafay is the wrong choice
Three cases, and in all three you should book something else.
- If the dunes are why you came to Morocco. No amount of good food fixes this. Give the desert the days it needs: our comparison of Zagora and Merzouga sets out exactly how many.
- If you have two spare days. Then you do not need the compromise. Zagora in two days gives you a real desert night, from 80 EUR.
- If you have three or more. Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi is the trip people remember for years. Agafay is a pleasant evening; Erg Chebbi is the reason photographs of Morocco look like that.

How far is Agafay from Marrakech?

How long does an Agafay evening take?
Around five to six hours door to door. Pick-up in mid-afternoon, back in Marrakech by about nine in the evening.
Can you stay overnight in Agafay?
Camps there do offer it, but most visitors treat Agafay as an evening and sleep in Marrakech. If sleeping in the desert is the point, the Sahara is where that experience belongs.
Is Agafay good for families?
Yes, and it is often the better choice. The drive is under an hour in each direction, which is the single biggest difference when travelling with children, and the camel ride is short.
