Two Days to the Draa Valley, at Your Own Pace

This 2 day Zagora desert tour from Marrakech is private from start to finish. Your own air-conditioned vehicle, your own driver-guide for the two days, and nobody else in the car. You set the departure time, you decide where to stop, and you stay as long as you like at the places that hold you.

The road crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass, reaches the earthen ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, then turns south along the Draa Valley, the longest river in Morocco at 1,100 kilometres, through one palm grove after another to Zagora. This is the town of the old caravan road, where a sign still reads Timbuktu, 52 days by camel.

One thing worth knowing before you book. Zagora is a flat, stony desert with scattered dunes, not the tall orange sand sea people picture. What You Will See and Do

The Tizi n’Tichka pass. The highest paved road in Morocco, at 2,260 metres, winding through walnut terraces and villages built into the hillside. Snow on the peaks in winter, wildflowers in spring. Your driver stops where the view earns it.
The ksar of Ait Ben Haddou. Earth towers and crenellated walls climbing to a hilltop granary, a UNESCO World Heritage site on the old caravan road, and the backdrop of more films than any other place in Morocco. A licensed local guide can walk it with you, on request and paid on site.
The Draa Valley and the village of Agdz. South of the Anti Atlas the road runs beside one continuous palm grove, hemmed by earthen kasbahs and irrigation channels that have been worked for centuries. This stretch, not the sand, is what most travellers remember.
Sunset camel trek near Zagora. About an hour out through the stony plain and the low dunes, as the light drops and the flat horizon turns copper. A second trek follows at sunrise the next morning.
A luxury camp, dinner and breakfast. A private ensuite tent with a real bed, set out of sight of the road. Dinner is served at the camp and breakfast the next morning, both included in the price.
Berber music and a sky without towns. Drums around the fire after dinner, then a night sky with no city glow for a hundred kilometres. Whether you stay up for it is your call.

Know Before You Go

Please note that Zagora is a flat, rocky desert with very few sand dunes. The scenery is unique but differs from the iconic Sahara dunes found in other regions.
The driving time from Marrakech to Zagora is approximately 7 hours (excluding stops for sightseeing, meals, photos, or breaks).
Bring comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat for sun protection.
Winter Season: The Zagora desert can get extremely cold at night, especially during the winter months. Be sure to pack warm clothing, including thermal layers
Camel Ride: Enjoy roughly 1-hour camel rides during sunset and sunrise, offering breathtaking views of the desert landscape.
Luggage: You can bring a small backpack for the desert camp while your main luggage is stored safely in the vehicle.

Your 2 Day Zagora Desert Tour from Marrakech, Day by Day

Day 1Day 1: Marrakech, Ait Ben Haddou and the Draa Valley to Zagora

Departure from Marrakech. Your driver-guide collects you at your hotel or riad at the time you have chosen. An early start leaves more room in the day, but this is a private tour, so the hour is yours to set.
Over the Tizi n’Tichka pass. The road climbs through the High Atlas to 2,260 metres, past walnut terraces and villages built into the slope. Stops wherever the view is worth it, and a glass of mint tea at the top if you want one.
The ksar of Ait Ben Haddou. A UNESCO World Heritage site of earthen towers on the old caravan road, and the backdrop of more films than any other place in Morocco. You walk up at your own pace. A licensed local guide can take you through it on request, paid on site.
Lunch stop, at your expense. Either at Ait Ben Haddou or in Ouarzazate. Lunches are not included in the price, so you pick the place and the budget. Allow around 8 to 12 EUR.
South through the Draa Valley. Past the Anti Atlas and the Berber village of Agdz, the road runs beside one continuous palm grove hemmed by earthen kasbahs. This stretch is the part most travellers remember, more than the sand itself.

Day 2Day 2: Sunrise in the Desert, Ouarzazate and Back to Marrakech

Camel trek at sunrise. A second ride of about an hour, out from the camp as the light comes up over the flat horizon. Then a Moroccan breakfast at the camp before you leave, included in the price.
Back up the Draa Valley. The same palm groves in the opposite light, which is not the same drive at all. Your driver stops where you ask.
The Taourirt Kasbah in Ouarzazate. The old Glaoui residence at the gate of the desert, a warren of earthen rooms and courtyards above the palm grove. Entry is around 3 EUR, paid on site.
Lunch stop, at your expense. In Ouarzazate before the road back. As on day one, the meal is yours to choose and to pay.
Return over the Tizi n’Tichka pass. The Atlas once more, from the other side, and a last look at the peaks before the plain of Marrakech opens up.
Arrival in Marrakech. You are dropped at your hotel or riad in the late afternoon or early evening, depending on how long you have lingered along the way.

What time does the tour start?

You choose. This is a private tour, so the departure time is yours to set. Most travellers leave Marrakech early in the morning to reach Ait Ben Haddou before the middle of the day, but if you would rather start later, tell us when you book.

Does Zagora have big sand dunes?

Not the tall orange dunes most people picture. Zagora is a flat, stony desert with scattered low dunes near the camp, and the real reward of this route is the Draa Valley palm groves on the way down. How long is the drive from Marrakech to Zagora?

Around 7 hours each way, not counting stops. It is a long day on the road, and that is the trade-off of seeing the desert in two days. Because the tour is private, you stop when you want, and the drive is broken by the Tizi n’Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou and the Draa Valley.

How much does the tour cost per person?

It depends on how many of you travel, because the vehicle and the guide are yours alone. The price runs from 558 EUR for one traveller down to 185 EUR per person for a group of 14 to 17. See the full price table for every group size.

How long is the camel ride?

About one hour, twice: once at sunset on the way in to the camp, and once at sunrise the next morning. Both are included. If you would rather not ride, you can reach the camp by 4×4 instead, just tell us in advance.

What is the desert camp like?

A luxury camp near Zagora with a private ensuite tent, a real bed and its own bathroom, set away from the road. Dinner is served at the camp, there is Berber music around the fire afterwards, and breakfast follows in the morning. Both meals are in the price.

Is a guide included at Ait Ben Haddou?

Your driver-guide stays with you throughout and speaks English. A licensed local guide inside the ksar of Ait Ben Haddou and at the Taourirt Kasbah is available on request and paid on site, which is why it appears in the exclusions rather than the inclusions.

Can I bring children on this tour?

Yes, and the private format suits families well: you set the pace and stop when you need to. Bear in mind the long driving days. Child seats and a shorter camel ride can be arranged if you ask when booking.

Can you collect us from our riad?

Yes. Pick-up and drop-off at your accommodation in Marrakech are included. If your riad sits inside the medina where vehicles cannot enter, we meet you at the nearest square and walk you to the car.

What should I pack?

Comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat. Bring a small backpack for the camp and leave your main luggage in the vehicle. From November to February the desert gets genuinely cold after dark, so pack warm layers.

Are vegetarian or vegan meals available?

Yes, at no extra cost. Tell us when you book so the camp kitchen is ready for you. The same goes for allergies and any other dietary requirement.
