The Atlas Mountains, an Hour and a Half from the Medina

This day trip to Imlil from Marrakech with lunch is private from start to finish: your own vehicle, your own driver, and a guide who lives in the valley waiting for you when you arrive. No other passengers, and no group pace to keep up with on the path.

Imlil sits at 1,800 metres in the Mizane valley, about 65 kilometres south of Marrakech and a little under two hours by road. It is the last village the road reaches, which is why it has become the natural place to hire mountain guides and mules for everything that lies higher up. Jebel Toubkal, at 4,167 metres the highest peak in North Africa, begins here. You are not climbing it on a day trip, but you walk the first paths that lead to it, through walnut groves and terraced fields that are still farmed by hand.

What You Will See and Do

  • The walk above Imlil. Your guide sets the route on the day, according to the season and what your group is up for. The usual line climbs through the walnut groves towards Aroumd, the last hamlet before the high mountain, on paths that villagers use to reach their fields.
  • A working valley, not a viewpoint. Imlil is a real village of several thousand people, with a school, a clinic and a mule station rather than a row of souvenir stalls. Walnuts, cherries and apples come off these terraces, and the irrigation channels that feed them are older than the road.
  • Lunch with a local family. A tagine cooked to order, bread baked the same morning, and seasonal fruit, eaten looking down the valley. It is included in the price, and it is cooked when you arrive rather than held on a buffet.
  • Mint tea in a Berber home. A stop in a village house, where the welcome is part of the visit rather than a performance of it. Your guide translates, since Tachelhit is the first language here.
  • The road itself. The drive climbs out of the Haouz plain through Asni and its Saturday market, then follows the river up. Your driver stops where the view is worth it, not at a fixed list of shops.

Know Before You Go

  • Booking: book ahead so the valley guide and the family lunch can be arranged for your date.
  • What to bring: water, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. There are shops in Imlil but none on the paths.
  • Footwear: closed walking shoes with grip. The paths are stony, and trainers are enough only in dry weather.
  • Layers: at 1,800 metres the air is cooler than in Marrakech, and it drops quickly once the sun goes behind the ridge. Bring a jacket in any season.

Morning part of the Imlil itinerary

  • Departure from your accommodation. Your driver collects you in Marrakech in the morning. The road crosses the Haouz plain, then climbs through Asni and follows the Mizane river up the valley. Close to two hours, with a stop for the view if you want one.
  • Arrival in Imlil and the start of the walk. Your local guide meets you in the village and sets off on foot, through the walnut groves and the terraced fields above the houses. The pace is yours, and the route is chosen on the day for the season and for your group.

Afternoon part of the Imlil itinerary

  • A Berber home and mint tea. A stop in a village house, where you are shown how a mountain household is built and heated, and why the rooms are arranged the way they are. Your guide translates.
  • Lunch above the valley. A tagine cooked to order by a local family, with fresh bread and seasonal fruit, served looking down the Mizane. This is included in the price of the trip.
  • The paths towards Aroumd. If the group is willing, the walk continues towards the last hamlet before the high mountain, where the trail to Toubkal begins. Mules pass on the same path, carrying what the road cannot reach.

Evening part of the Imlil itinerary

Back to Marrakech. You set off when you have walked enough. Count close to two hours down the valley road, and expect to reach your accommodation in the evening.

How long is the day trip to Imlil?

The trip lasts approximately 8-9 hours, with pickup in the morning from your hotel in Marrakech and return by evening.

Is lunch included?

Yes. A traditional Moroccan lunch is included in the price, cooked to order by a local family and eaten looking down the valley. Tagine, bread baked the same morning and seasonal fruit. Tell us at booking if anyone is vegetarian or has an allergy.

What is the level of difficulty of the trek in Imlil?

Moderate, and entirely up to you. Count 2 to 3 hours of walking on stony mountain paths, with some climbing. Your guide sets the pace and shortens or extends the route on the day, so the walk suits families and anyone comfortable on uneven ground.

Can we climb Mount Toubkal on this trip?

No. Toubkal rises to 4,167 metres and needs at least two days with an overnight at the refuge, so it cannot be done between morning and evening. What you do here is walk the lower paths of the same valley, the ones that lead towards Aroumd and the foot of the massif, and see the summit from below.
