Why Merzouga takes three days and not two
Nine to ten hours of driving is not a stretch you do twice in a weekend. Every honest Merzouga itinerary splits the journey over two days, with a night in the Dades Valley on the way out, so that the drive is broken and you arrive at the dunes with something left.
If someone offers you Merzouga in two days, they are either driving through the night or not taking you to Merzouga. Three days is the honest minimum. The 3 day private desert tour is that minimum done properly; the 4 day version removes the pressure entirely.
The road is not wasted, which is worth saying. It crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 metres, the highest paved road in the country, then follows the kasbah road through the Todra and Dades gorges. Much of what people remember happens on the way.
The 360 kilometre alternative
Zagora exists in every brochure for one reason: at 360 kilometres and seven hours, it is the desert that fits into two days. You cross the same Tizi n’Tichka pass, pass Ait Ben Haddou, then follow the Draa Valley south.

The desert you can reach in an hour
At 30 kilometres, Agafay is closer to Marrakech than Ourika. It is a stone desert with no dunes, and it is the only one you can visit in an evening: the quad and camel evening from 55 EUR, or dinner and a sunset camel ride from 60 EUR.

The mountains are much closer than the desert
People often assume the High Atlas means a long journey. It does not.
- Ourika begins 30 kilometres out, and Setti Fatma at the head of the valley is 60 to 65. One to one and a half hours: the Ourika day trip.
- Imlil is 65 kilometres, about two hours, and sits at 1,800 metres under Jebel Toubkal, which at 4,167 metres is the highest peak in North Africa: the Imlil day trip with lunch and a local guide.

The mountains give you height and a change of air within two hours. The desert does not start to deliver until you have driven for seven.
Waterfalls, kasbahs and the coast
