Shared Day Trip to Ourika Valley and the Atlas Mountains

Setti Fatma, at the end of the valley, is about 60 to 65 km south of Marrakech, which is one hour to one hour thirty by road. The first 35 km cross the flat Haouz plain, then the road starts climbing and following the river, and it is the second half that takes the time.

The tour runs with an English and French speaking driver, who knows the valley and answers questions along the way, but a walking guide is not included. There are seven waterfalls stepping down the mountainside above the village. The first two are the ones almost everyone reaches: roughly 45 minutes up a rocky path, crossing the stream on small wooden bridges. Going beyond the second waterfall takes real scrambling and more time than the tour allows.

The walk is optional. It is not a technical climb, but the path is rocky, uneven and climbs steadily, and the stones stay wet near the water. Anyone in reasonable shape manages the first two waterfalls. If you would rather not walk, you can stay in the village, sit at a riverside cafe and wait for the group.

Wear closed shoes with a good grip, trainers or light walking shoes, never sandals or flip-flops: the rock by the waterfalls is wet and slippery. Bring a light jacket or fleece whatever the season, because the valley is several degrees cooler than Marrakech, plus sunscreen, a hat and water.

Spring, from March to May, is the finest moment: snowmelt feeds the waterfalls, the valley is green and the fruit trees are in blossom. Summer is the busiest, because the valley stays cool when the city is hot. Autumn is quiet and clear. In winter the valley is cold and the peaks are often under snow, and heavy rain can occasionally make the waterfall trail unsafe.

The river is shallow and the water comes off the mountains, so it is cold all year. There is no supervised bathing area and no lifeguard, and the current rises fast after rain or a storm upstream. Paddling at the edge is common, and the local habit is to sit at a cafe table set right in the stream rather than to swim.

The drive is short, the Berber house visit and the argan cooperative hold their attention, and the riverside cafes suit a family stop. The waterfall trail is the only demanding part, and it is optional, so one parent can stay below with younger children.
