A Real Weekly Souk, Then a Village That Still Farms

This Berber market day trip from Marrakech takes you to the weekly souk of the day, then on to the Berber village of Tighedouine for a walk through the fields and lunch in a family home. It is a private day: your own vehicle, your own English-speaking guide, pick-up at 9:00 AM and back in Marrakech around 5:00 PM.

Around Marrakech, each rural market is held on one fixed day and takes its name from it. The souk you visit depends on the day you book: Tnine Ourika on Monday, Tlat Ait Ourir on Tuesday, Larbaa Tighedouine on Wednesday and Khmiss Tidili on Thursday. Farmers come down from the surrounding villages to sell their produce and livestock, and the whole area does its shopping for the week. These are working markets, not stalls set up for visitors.

The rest of the day takes place in Tighedouine (also spelled Tighdouine), a farming commune of the Zat Valley, about 63 kilometres south-east of Marrakech: the Ain Sidi El Wafi spring, the potters at work, and paths between garlic and onion fields facing the High Atlas. What You Will See and Do

  • The souk of the day. About 40 minutes with your guide among the stalls of vegetables, herbs, spices and livestock. He explains how the market works, translates when you want to talk to a seller, and helps you pick up a bag of fresh mint if you fancy one.
  • The Berber village of Tighedouine. Earth houses, narrow lanes and a community that still lives from its fields. The commune counted some 22,000 inhabitants at the 2004 census, spread over the villages of the valley (source).
  • The Ain Sidi El Wafi spring. A mineral spring the village is known for: the analysis of its water is posted on a sign by the source. A quiet stop before the walk.
  • The potters. A look at the places where the villagers make their pottery by hand.
  • Garlic and onion fields of the Zat Valley. A walk on the farm paths between the plots, with the High Atlas ridge ahead. From October to February the fields are at their greenest.
  • Lunch in a Berber home. A Moroccan tagine cooked by the family and served in their house, included in the price.

FAQ

Which Berber market is on which day near Marrakech?

Each rural market around Marrakech is held on one fixed day, and its name tells you which. On this trip: Monday, Souk Tnine Ourika, at the entrance of the Ourika Valley; Tuesday, Souk Tlat Ait Ourir, east of Marrakech; Wednesday, Souk Larbaa Tighedouine; Thursday, Souk Khmiss Tidili. Tnine means Monday, Tlat Tuesday, Larbaa Wednesday and Khmiss Thursday.

What is a Berber weekly souk?

A rural market held once a week, where farmers from the surrounding villages sell vegetables, fruit, herbs, spices and livestock, and buy what they cannot produce themselves. Unlike the souks of the Marrakech medina, it is not organised for visitors: it is where the whole area does its weekly shopping.

Can I book this trip on Friday, Saturday or Sunday?

Online booking is open Monday to Thursday, the four days with a souk on this route. Friday and Sunday are possible on request, with a supplement, because the souk on those days is further away: contact us before booking. There is no departure on Saturday.

What time does the trip start and finish?

Pick-up at your accommodation in central Marrakech at 9:00 AM (€30 supplement outside the centre), and back around 5:00 PM. The day follows the same order: the souk in the morning, then Tighedouine, the walk through the fields and lunch in a Berber home.

Do you pick up from my hotel or riad?

Yes. If your accommodation is in central Marrakech, pick-up and drop-off are included in the price. Outside the city centre, a supplement of €30 applies. Tell us where you are staying when you book.

What language does the guide speak?

Your local guide speaks English. He explains the souk, translates when you want to talk to a seller, and leads the visit of Tighedouine and the walk through the fields.

Is lunch included?

Yes. Lunch is served in a Berber family home in Tighedouine: a Moroccan tagine cooked by the family. It is included in the price. Let us know about any dietary needs when you book.

What can I buy at the souk?

Mostly what the villagers buy: fresh mint, vegetables, fruit, spices and household goods. Your guide can help you pick up a bag of fresh mint or anything that catches your eye. These purchases are optional and paid by you, so bring small dirham notes.

When are the garlic and onion fields green?

From October to February. The rest of the year the walk crosses the same farmland at another stage of the season, with the same view of the High Atlas.

Where is Tighedouine (Tighdouine)?

Tighedouine, also spelled Tighdouine, is a rural commune of Al Haouz province in the Zat Valley, about 63 km south-east of Marrakech by road, and around 30 km beyond Ait Ourir.

Why is the minimum two travellers?

This is a private trip: the vehicle, the guide and the lunch are organised for your party only, so it is booked from 2 travellers.

How much does the Berber market day trip cost?

The price per person depends on the size of your group: €109 each for 2 travellers, €89 for 3, €79 for 4, €69 from 5 to 11 and €59 from 12 to 17. Transport, guide and lunch are included. The price table above gives the exact amount for your group.

Is the tour wheelchair accessible?

The drive and the riverside restaurants are manageable, but the path to the waterfalls is rocky, uneven and not adapted. Tell us your needs when you book and we will say honestly what is feasible and what is not.

Can I book the tour for a large group?

Yes, up to 17 travellers, and the price per person falls as the group grows. Tell us the size of your party when you book so the right vehicle is reserved.

How do I book the tour?

Book directly on this page: choose your date and the number of travellers, and the total updates as you go. We confirm your reservation and agree the pick-up time with you afterwards.

What happens if I need to cancel or reschedule my booking?

Cancel in writing, by email or WhatsApp. If you cancel more than 4 days before departure, your deposit is refunded in full. At 4 days or less, the deposit is kept, but you can use it as credit for another booking with us within 2 months. Date changes are free when requested more than 7 days before departure, subject to availability.

The souk was the part I was most curious about and it felt very local, not like a tourist market. We also enjoyed the walk near the fields. Lunch was simple and really good.

Très bonne journée, surtout le marché du matin. Il y avait beaucoup de vie et notre guide nous a expliqué quelques produits qu’on ne connaissait pas. Le tajine chez la famille était généreux.

Really interesting day outside Marrakech. The market was busy and a bit chaotic in a good way. It was quite warm during the walk, so bring water and a hat.

I liked that we saw normal daily life rather than just monuments. Tighedouine was peaceful after the souk, and the views across the fields were lovelya

El zoco fue muy auténtico y había muchísima actividad. Después, el pueblo y los campos ofrecían un ambiente totalmente distinto. La comida casera también nos gustó mucho
