Why Book the Private Trip

  • A vehicle for your party only. Air conditioned, door to door from your riad or hotel. No minibus, no waiting for eleven other people.
  • You set the clock. Leave early to arrive ahead of the coaches, or later if you would rather sleep in. Head back when you are ready.
  • A guide who knows the ground. Not a driver with a printed script, but someone who knows the places you cross and can answer what you actually want to ask.
  • No commission stops. The road is lined with cooperatives that pay drivers to bring visitors in. We stop where you want to stop.
  • One price, agreed before you leave. The table on this page is the full cost per person. Nothing is added on the day.

A Day in the Imlil Valley, at the Foot of Mount Toubkal

This private Imlil day trip with Berber lodge lunch takes you from Marrakech into the High Atlas for the day, with your own vehicle, your own driver, and a table waiting for you at a family-run lodge in the mountains. No other passengers, and no fixed group timetable once you are on the road.

The road climbs through Asni and follows the Rheraya valley up to Imlil, a village at 1,740 metres that is the main gateway to Toubkal National Park. Walnut groves, terraced fields and stone villages hold the slopes on both sides. What makes this day different from a drive with a viewpoint stop is the meal: lunch is cooked to order in a Berber lodge run by the family who live there, and you eat it looking at the mountains.

Prefer the walking to the table? Our private Imlil day trip with a local mountain guide is built around the hike instead. You can also browse all our private day trips from Marrakech.

What You Will See and Do

  • Lunch at a Berber lodge. A family-run house in Imlil, cooking for your party alone. Expect tagine, seasonal vegetables, bread baked that morning and mint tea, served on a terrace facing the valley. It is cooked when you arrive, not held on a buffet, so it takes the time it takes. Vegetarian on request when you book.
  • The village of Imlil. At 1,740 metres, the last village the road reaches and the place where every Toubkal ascent begins. Mules still carry loads up the tracks because nothing else can. Walnut trees line the riverbed, and the air is noticeably cooler than Marrakech.
  • The hike, if you want it. A local mountain guide takes you on a 2 hour or 3 hour walk through the terraced fields and the hamlets above the village. Or you skip it entirely. Both options cost the same, and you decide on the day, not at booking.
  • The hamlet of Aroumd. Half an hour on foot above Imlil, a village of flat-roofed stone houses stacked on a moraine, with the Toubkal massif closing the valley behind it. The usual turning point of the longer walk, and the view most people remember.
  • The gateway to Mount Toubkal. At 4,167 metres the highest peak in North Africa, visible from the valley on a clear day. Climbing it is a two day trek and not part of this trip, but you stand at its front door.
  • The drive through Asni. A market town on the way up, busiest on Saturday when the weekly souk fills the riverbank. Your driver stops where the view is worth it, not at a fixed list of shops.

Your Imlil Day Trip with Berber Lodge Lunch, Step by Step

Day 1 Marrakech to Imlil, and back

Pick-up in Marrakech. Your driver collects you from your hotel or riad in the morning. The vehicle is yours for the day, air-conditioned, with an English-speaking driver.

Up through Asni. The road leaves the plain and starts to climb. Orchards, red earth and the first stone villages on the slopes. On Saturdays the weekly souk fills the riverbank at Asni, and it is worth the stop.

Arrival in Imlil. The road ends at the village, 1,740 metres up, where the Toubkal valley opens in front of you. Mules wait at the parking area because the tracks above take nothing else.

Your walk, or not. A local mountain guide meets you here. Take the 2 hour route through the terraced fields, the 3 hour route up towards Aroumd, or skip the walking and spend the time in the village. You choose on the spot.

Lunch at the Berber lodge. The family cooks for your party when you arrive. Tagine, vegetables, fresh bread, mint tea, eaten facing the mountains. This is the part of the day that people remember, so it is not rushed.

Back to Marrakech. The descent in the afternoon light, with drop-off at your accommodation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tour suitable for children or elderly travelers?

Yes, the tour is family-friendly and flexible. Guests can skip the hike and simply enjoy the scenic drive and relaxing lunch at the Berber lodge.

Do I have to hike in Imlil?

No, hiking is optional. You can choose a 2 hour or a 3 hour guided hike with a local mountain guide, or skip the walking entirely and spend the time in the village and at the lodge. Both options cost the same, and you decide on the day rather than at booking.

What kind of food is served at the Berber lodge?

You’ll enjoy a traditional homemade Moroccan lunch, typically including tagine, seasonal vegetables, fresh bread, and mint tea. Vegetarian options are available upon request.

Is hotel pick-up included in the price?

Yes, we provide private hotel or riad pick-up and drop-off anywhere in Marrakech.

What should I wear for this trip?

Comfortable walking shoes, layered clothing, and sunscreen are recommended, especially if you choose to hike. The weather in the mountains can change quickly.

How far is Imlil from Marrakech?

Imlil is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours from Marrakech by car, depending on traffic and stops along the way.

Is this tour available year-round?

Yes, this private Imlil day tour operates all year. In winter, the mountains may have snow, which adds to the charm.

Is there a minimum number of travellers?

Yes, this private trip is sold from 2 travellers. The price per person falls as the group grows, from €160 for two down to €120 for a group of 14 to 17. The vehicle is yours alone whatever the size of your party.

How is this different from your other Imlil day trip?

They are two different trips to the same valley. This one is built around the table: a home-cooked meal at a family-run Berber lodge, with the walking left optional. Our private Imlil day trip with a local mountain guide is built around the hike instead, and is priced differently. Pick the one that matches how you want to spend the day.

Can we walk up to Aroumd?

Yes, that is the usual turning point of the 3 hour route. Aroumd sits about half an hour on foot above Imlil, a village of flat-roofed stone houses built on a moraine, with the Toubkal massif closing the valley behind it. The path climbs steadily, so it suits anyone comfortable on uneven ground.
